The Tennessee Credit Union League & TNFLC: A Shared Vision for a Financially Stronger Future

At the Tennessee Credit Union League, our mission has always been the success and advancement of credit unions. Today, we define that success by the financial health of our communities. That is why we are proud to announce our primary investment in the Tennessee Financial Literacy Commission (TNFLC) and the “Education: Worth the Investment” initiative.

Why We Invest: The Credit Union Difference

The Tennessee Financial Literacy Commission (TNFLC) is at the forefront of financial education in Tennessee, working to empower students, teachers, and families with the knowledge and skills necessary for financial security. With strong partnerships, including those with credit unions, we have made great strides in reaching communities across the state. However, there remains a critical need to scale our initiatives, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

Key Initiatives

High School Personal Finance Master Teacher Program Pilot

Currently, high school educators who teach personal finance in Tennessee are required to receive 14 hours of approved training to become eligible to teach the course. After completing these initial hours, no additional training is required. To promote deeper expertise, TNFLC proposes a Master Teacher Program that incentivizes educators to engage in an additional 10 hours of professional development each year.

Tennessee Financial Wellness Scorecard Summits

Regional convenings in East, Middle, and West Tennessee will engage policymakers, local leaders, state agencies, and other stakeholder groups, including credit union representatives, in discussions about Tennessee’s financial wellness landscape.

Seed Grants for Community Financial Wellness Initiatives

These grants are envisioned to support projects such as Family Financial Literacy Nights, school-based financial literacy collections, student-led financial literacy clubs, and community financial wellness workshops. By providing funding to schools and organizations, TNFLC will ensure that financial education reaches underserved communities.

Expansion of Money Week to 14 Additional Schools

Money Week is a weeklong celebration for first and second-grade classrooms. Our partnership with UT Extension provides all needed teaching supplies, books, and other program materials for Tennessee schools to successfully implement the program. It also allows every student completing Money Week to receive a free take-home book along with newsletters designed to inform and engage the entire household on the financial concepts the students are learning in the classroom.
